NearVisionSMCK®

Conductive Keratoplasty® (CK®) is the only FDA-approved treatment for presbyopia – the natural loss of vision that occurs with age. CK® is designed to return the eye to the visual acuity of young age, reducing or eliminating reliance on reading glasses.
Presbyopia
Presbyopia is defined as a gradual drop-off in visual acuity that starts to occur in middle age. It affects most people over the age of 40. Initially, a person might notice that they experience fatigue reading in low light conditions, or toward the end of the day. Over time, they will begin to hold reading material farther away, and ultimately reading glasses will be required. Almost everyone experiences presbyopia eventually, but hyperopes are affected more seriously than are people with good vision or with myopia.
Presbyopia develops as the crystalline lens inside the eye loses its flexibility over time. This makes it difficult to adjust from distance vision to close focus, and may eventually make it impossible to focus at either depth.
The CK® Procedure
One of the biggest advantages of NearVisionSM CK® is the ease and simplicity with which it can be performed. The procedure takes only a few minutes, and no cutting of any kind is required. Instead, CK® is performed using radio frequency (RF) energy to reshape the cornea by steepening its contour. Most patients describe the procedure as completely painless.
Once Dr. Burns has applied anesthetic eye drops, he will treat the cornea with RF energy in a circular pattern using a handheld instrument. The RF energy shrinks corneal tissue in the treated areas. By treating peripheral areas of the cornea, Dr. Burns can change its contour in order to correct for the diminished focusing power of presbyopia.
Once the procedure is complete, most patients notice an immediate improvement in their vision. Results generally continue to improve for a few weeks after the procedure before stabilizing. Although the results of CK® are not permanent – vision will still continue to deteriorate with time – the procedure is able to substantially improve vision.
Most complications associated with NearVisionSM CK® are minor and temporary. After the procedure, some people feel the sensation of a foreign body in the eye. Some experience glare, halos, or other optical effects. It is also possible that a doctor may overcorrect the eye, though with an experienced surgeon like Dr. Burns this possibility is very remote.
Is CK® Right for Me?
Most people over 40 with declining vision are good candidates for NearVisionSM CK®. In particular, CK® is safe for most hyperopic and presbyopic individuals. CK® is not recommended for patients with myopia. All patients considering vision correction should undergo a complete examination by Dr. Burns prior to scheduling the procedure. You're likely a good candidate for for NearVisionSM CK® if you:
Patients who are not good CK® candidates may wish to consider advanced intraocular lenses to restore their near vision.
